Pure Joy Mini Art Quilt

"Pure Joy"  mini art quilt

Just finished this one yesterday.  11 X 11 inches on the quilt part, straps hang 2 1/4 inches down.  These is no shortage of work that goes into these little doosies.  The background fabric paper is an original piece of artwork in itself (though other artist's papers were used in the mix.)  Keep looking and you'll continue finding new little things you had not seen before!

Have a nice one, Cynthia

New Beginnings...

Well, I guess I see what a fitness challenge on the blog results in;  me just not writing at all!  I have flunked out on my latest challenge (a walk a day for 30 days.)  So, I'm going to have to regroup and begin again at a later date.  Don't worry, I'm not giving up, but for now, I want to get back to blogging daily, and making some artwork.

I've been working on more free motion quilting, making little girl characters and the like.  I do however, have 3 commissions that I need to get started.  One is a geisha doll for my friend Kim.  I started a head for the thing a long while back, but have lost it in this mess of a studio...and desire to just begin again.  I don't know if I'm making a real 'doll' or if I should make a flat quilted doll with a little 3-d hair action.  I'm going to do a little sketching and gathering of materials in the studio (ones I CAN find) to help me figure it out.  Putting these comissions off is NOT AN OPTION!!!

Ok...I'm off to work, and will have photos to post soon!!!

Have a great day, and Go Big Blue...Kentucky Wildcats!!!! Yeah Rah!

Are Craft Shows Worth It? TWO

Here's another thing I think I may have discovered through a friend:  maybe I've been doing the wrong type shows.  There are art shows, art n craft shows, and craft shows.  The MAJOR DIFFERENCE IS THIS:  PEOPLE GO TO ART SHOWS TO BUY ART....AND PEOPLE GO TO ART N CRAFT SHOWS TO BUY CHEAPER TID seems to me.  There can be a whole lot of discrepancy between 'arts' and 'crafts' and what all that means.  Is an art a craft, is a craft an art?  Depends, doesn't it!  On what exactly can be hard to pin point.

Especially if you are a new in any is hard to have the confidence to just start applying for art venues....shows and galleries.  I have never gone to a gallery to try and sell my work.  However, this now seems like the best idea for me.  Make your art and let someone else sell it for you.  Like it!!!  I know they take a percentage, but they will most likely be able to sell the piece for more money than if you sold the piece somewhere you won't incur all the expenses of doing a show...which are generally quite large.  You can still try to do free shows, and less expensive shows...this will help spread the word about your artwork, and draw people to your website, online presence, or gallery shows.  It will also help you connect with other artists, where you can ask them questions about what shows are best to do, and which galleries are the best to work with.  You may even be able to 'share' a booth with another artist to lessen expenses.  These are all viable ideas.

Hope you enjoyed this post and that it was helpful.  If you have anything you'd like to add, please do so!!!

Have a great day now!  It's sunny and gorgeous here in Virginia Beach!!!

Peace Out, Cynthia

Spring Has Sprung! CHANGE is in the AIR!!!

Went out for a walk the other day, and came back with some lovely photos of nature's beauty to be found right here on my own street!  You know, sometimes it's hard for us to make life changes, especially the ones that would be the most beneficial to us.  However, I have discovered a little secret;  challenge yourself to do whatever it is for 30 days....and if you miss a day, don't get discouraged...finish the task.  It's a personal understand WHY you committed yourself to it in the first, if you keep up with nothing will keep up with your challenge.  What's more, when you finish the challenge you will have accomplished something...perhaps something major you never thought you could do...and look, you did it!!!  Now there will be a sense of achievement, success, and fulfillment inside you that you are going to like.  You can see the benefits to your change...and decide to keep the change in your life.  If you can do it for 30 days, you can do it for most of the rest of your life.

For me, the next 30 day challenge is going to be one I don't want to do.  It's the thing I have the hardest time with in my current life:  exercise!!!  I always say..."Oh I'll do it later."  Then later never comes.  But the pounds do...and the sense of losing my health along with it.  Everyone needs exercise in their lives to make them whole, healthy and strong.  Plus, it also does a great deal for our mental health...which is easy to forget when one is in the throws of depression or other mental issues.

SO TODAY I CHALLENGE YOU TO THE 30 DAY CHALLENGE!  What will you do for 30 days (pretty much in a row) to help your life or the lives of others.  Let us know here in the comment section...and keep us posted on how it's going.  Remember, it's never too late to make a change.

Have a great day,

Are Craft Shows Worth It?

Boy oh boy, have I ever had a big debate about this in my own mind!!!  It seems to me that the 'learning curve' for getting into the 'right' shows is pretty harsh, if you have no real guidance.  And, there are a lot of facets to the whole thing.  First, you have to invest in tables, chairs, display gear, signage, a tent, and perhaps a credit card machine (plus the percentage you will pay to the credit card companies...and the company your machine works through.)  All of this stuff costs quite a bit of money.  Next, if you do shows at certain venues out of state, you will be required to get a tax liscense.  For the show I did in Arizona I had to have one from the city and one from the state.  This costs money...and then when the show is over, you will have to sit down and figure out how to fill out the forms and send in some more money depending on how much you sold.  They don't care what your expenses still have to pay them their money....even if you ended up on the minus side of the whole encounter.

Next, when you are choosing shows, you might make the mistake of getting in on a buy/sell show.  This is a show where others buy stuff largely from the likes of China and then resell it.  Great way to help the American economy don't you think?  NOT!  But these shows are out there, and people just flock to them to get their cheap junk.  I and many others did one such show around Christmas in Richmond, VA.  It was awful.  I sat in the booth on the 3rd of 4 days and cried.  I and others were also very confused as we had had to send in photos of our work as if it were a juried show (a show were only handmade art n craft is allowed.)  Lost well over 700.00 on this one...over 500.00 for the booth, then hotel and gas expenses.  This kind of 'mistake' makes even trying unafordable.  Of course, I will now ALWAYS make sure my future shows are not buy/sell.

Then, there are just a lot of lousy venues out will pay money to sit there all day and not even make back the money you spent to be in the show.  It grows old quick, and you have to develop a thick skin and learn not to take it personally.

1.  You get to meet your audience and see who it is that's interested in what you do.
2.  You get a chance to see people 'try on,' try out your product...see the joy and excitement produced therein, or see what things might make your work more desired by the public/your audience.
3.  You can get the word out about your art/craft, and hand out cards enabling future sales through your ETSY shop, website, blog, or the next show you will be doing.
4.  You sometimes meet people that can open other doors to other avenues for you.  This can be quite helpful.
5.  You meet other artisans and crafts people who can give you valueable information on other shows they have done.  I have heard it said many times that NETWORKING IS THE KEY TO SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS IN ARTS AND CRAFTS!!!

So these are just some things I could think of off the top of my head.  Here is a link a friend sent me to more comments of this topic!  Please feel free to leave your comments here as well, I'd love to hear from you!!!

Have a good one, Cynthia

Little Things...

Believe me, I know these don't GO together....they are just WHAT HAPPENED!!!!  I love the 3rd one that says, "Have Fun."  They will be for sale on my ETSY shop and are part of a new "30 Days" Challenge I'll be doing.  They are each on 4X4 inch stretched canvas;  oil paints, acrylics, glitter, crushed colored mica, matte medium and paper embellishments were used to make them.  --Oh, and a 'ruined' paint brush!!!  I never throw them away...they always come in handy for just this type of thing!

Have a good one!

Just Wanted to Say...

The artists who have been featured in '30 Days of My ETSY Favorites' have been SO gracious and diligent in thanking me for featuring them on my blog.  There have also been a good amount of compliments about how NICE THE BLOG IS.  I THANK YOU for your sweet compliments, and kind messages.  It's always great to be appreciated, and from one artist to another...THANKS FOR THAT!!!  Winning!!!  lol.  Just had to put that in...

Yes, it's always nice when people take the time to appreciate your work, in whatever form.  Whether you are picking up trash, facilitating a satisfactory experience at the mini mart, curing cancer in a lab, or pouring a cold one at the local's sure nice to be appreciated.  Artists put part of themselves into their work....anyone can be an artist.  Are you an artist at what you do? Have you made something seemingly mundane an art?  Awesome....good for you I say!!!  Goodness knows, if there can be an "art of motorcycle maintenance"....then there can be an art of/to anything!

Take care, and have a wonderful day!

New on My ETSY Shop!

Here's some fun stuff I just added to my ETSY....go check it out!

The bottom pieces are pretty old----sometimes I make things and they stay a while before I decide to part with them....for whatever reason!  The top one, which I'm sure you can tell, was done after I got better with painting.  It's about 1 1/2 years old.  I'm working on new stuff now....learning more about "painting" with my sewing machine onto fabric...and then watercolor type painting over that for even more depth and definition!  It's been a wild and crazy ride....and it's so fun to look back and see how far I've come!  I no longer 'have' to rely so heavily on photos and collage elements in my work....I now get to use them in new and different creative ways to ADD to what I'm doing.

Remember, you are never too old to start something new.  Do what you love, for hobby or work if you can, and eventually you will see parts of yourself shining through that you never realized were there.

Have a great day....Inspire and Be Inspired!!!
